A Chapter of the NYSAA

Lewis H. Morgan was born in 1818, the ninth of thirteen children in Aurora New York. After coming to Rochester in 1850, he gained fame when his League of the Iroquois was published. His later publication, Ancient Society, won him esteem from anthropologists and political scientists world wide. Morgan passed away in 1881 leaving behind a legacy of anthropological research that continues to teach generation after generation.

NYSAA

The New York State Archaeological Association is a non-profit organization for people interested in the archaeology of New York State. NYSAA is composed of fifteen regional chapters and a world-wide membership-at-large. The Lewis Henry Morgan Chapter of Rochester, New York is the oldest and largest chapter of the NYSAA.

Goals of the Lewis H. Morgan Rochester Regional Chapter
To promote archaeological and historical research concerning the artifacts, rites, customs, beliefs and other phases of the lives and culture of the occupants of New York State.   

To preserve archaeological sites in cooperation with the NYSAA and with other archaeological institutions.

To maintain sympathetic appreciation of the history of the American Indian, particularly of those Indians aboriginal to New York State.                                  

To encourage the use of accepted methods of archeological research and  publish papers covering the results of field work of members or other matters within the purview of the chapter.

To help secure legislation for anthropological, archaeological or historical purposes.
